Mowat & Company was employed by the Alec Reed Academy (formally the West London Academy) to create a design for a breakout area that Year 9 pupils could use for formal performance, learning activities and during break times. The challenge was to balance these varied functional requirements with the need to create a space that would encourage individualism and build confidence amongst the pupils.
The design used an informal geometry that contrasted with the overall orthogonal building to create an individual space for the pupils. Four curved seating elements created the immediacy and intimacy of a theatre-in-the-round.
The pupils described the space as ‘brilliant, especially as a place to hang out.’
