This exhibition brought together paintings from the National Gallery and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, many of them for the first time since they were painted. The exhibition linked all the temporary galleries at the National Gallery into a sequence of alternating light and dark galleries to heighten the visitor’s experience. 

By working closely with the curatorial team we devised an exhibition that defied the convention of a chronology and generated an exhibition that conveyed the mood of both Rembrandt and the subjects of his paintings. Light galleries explored Rembrandt’s techniques. Darker galleries for the sections exploring more emotive themes. Six entrance tunnels lined the doorways. These were made from textured timber veneer and were angled to frame the key works of art for each room.

"I wanted something that was simple and modern, but at the same time respectful of Rembrandt’s work. Mowat & Company has come up with a design that expresses essential messages of the show in a very simple, direct and elegant way.  The chiaroscuro effects and textured surfaces of the entry ‘tunnels’ immediately signal to the visitor key elements of Rembrandt’s art. The wall colours work beautifully with paintings, drawings and prints - no easy task - and the variation from room to room propels the mood of the exhibition towards its dramatic conclusion."
